Accessories – First Aid Kits And Boxes

Table of Contents

Although many of us may have been accustomed to seeing first aid kits at our place of work as part of our employer’s health and safety responsibility, we might not think about having a first aid kit at home. That’s a mistake which we can easily correct by getting hold of one of the kits we show below.

Why a home needs a first aid kit

First aid by its very definition is something that’s needed immediately. And while none of us wish for an accident to happen in the home however careful we are accidents can and do happen. We can think of various examples. A burn in the kitchen, a cut while peeling vegetables or removing the fat from a piece of meat, and even a fall. Any of these incidents would call for a first aid kit. And in the case of a more serious accident, they can be a vital resource until the emergency services arrive.

But accidents are not the only thing to consider. For example, having pain relievers on hand is essential to deal with ailments such as a headache or a fever. And medicines such as these need to be kept safely and ideally in a first aid container out of reach of young children.

Bear in mind also that in an emergency where you and your family may have to vacate your home, it’s important to have a first aid kit as part of your “grab bag” to take with you.

What should a first aid kit for the home contain?

The list could be endless and the list below is just an indication. However, besides a first aid manual and emergency contact information, essential items would include:

  • Adhesive bandages to deal with small cuts, blisters, and abrasions.
  • Sterile gauze pads and adhesive tape so you can dress larger wounds.
  • Antiseptic products to clean wounds and stop the possibility of infection.
  • Scissors and tweezers to cut tape, gauze, or remove splinters (the kind of scissors needed for a first aid kit are different to those we normally have on hand in the home).
  • Disposable gloves to maintain hygiene and prevent accidental infection.
  • Pain relievers and cream / ungents to deal with pain and fever and burns.
  • Antihistamines to counter allergic reactions and symptoms.
  • A thermometer to establish whether a fever is present.
  • Regularly check the valid dates

It’s important for you to check that all of the contents of your first aid kit are still valid and to renew items as necessary.
