We offer some key points which you should bear in mind when choosing solar extension cables for portable power stations as your choice is wide. These are necessary for you to ensure efficient and safe operation.

points to consider

  • First, the cable "gauge" is a measure of its thickness and how much much current it can handle. The lower the number the thicker the cable, and the thicker the cable the more current it can handle. Look for able extensions with cables with a low AWG (e.g., 10 AWG) to minimize power loss. AWG is an acronym for American Wire Gauge, a rating system used mainly in North America for the diameters of electrical conducting wire and it has been in use for over 150 years. As you can see from the illustration below, wire gauge sizes are associated with numerical values (whilst the relative numberss here are correct, the sizes shown are for illustrative purposes only).

  • Cable length is important because longer cables result in increased power loss resulting from resistance. Depending on your needs, consider keeping the cable as short as possible for maximum efficiency.
  • Your power station will have specific connectors. For example, Jackery use a bespoke connector so an adapter will be needed. Connectors you'll usually find  include MC4 connectors and Anderson Powerpole connectors.
  • We can have less of a dependence on, for example, the grid which can go down during severe weather conditions and other emergencies, leaving us without an essential living condition.
  • When used in conjunction with grid power solar panels can have a real impact in lowering our electricity bills. This applies particularly in areas where the sun shines almost every day.
  • During peak demands, when the grid is under considerable pressure, excess energy from solar panels can feed into the grid system and thereby relieve some of that pressure.
