How Solar Panels Work

You may hear solar panels also being referred to by their more technical name of photovoltaic (PV) cells. They are marvellous bits of tech that have origins dating back to the late 19th century. With the passage of time thay have become muchmore efficient in the way they generate electricity from sunlight.

At its most basic, a solar panel is made of semiconductor materials, typically of silicon, which make up the solar cells. When sunlight strikes these cells, it excites electrons resulting from the photovoltaic effect. This reaction creates and converts the electric current into DC (direct current) electricity.

benefits of a solar panel

The following information relates to solar panels in general, including those you can install in your home. But much of the information also applies to the solar panels that are available for portable power stations.

  • Solar panels use the rays of the sun which is a renewable source of energy that won't run out.
  • As solar power produces no harmful emissions its use does not add to the problems of global warming caused by greenhouse gases.
  • When compared to the more traditional sources of energy generation, solar panels are cheaper to operate and have lower maintenance costs.
  • We can have less of a dependence on, for example, the grid which can go down during severe weather conditions and other emergencies, leaving us without an essential living condition.
  • When used in conjunction with grid power solar panels can have a real impact in lowering our electricity bills. This applies particularly in areas where the sun shines almost every day.
  • During peak demands, when the grid is under considerable pressure, excess energy from solar panels can feed into the grid system and thereby relieve some of that pressure.
  • and some of the disadvantages

  • Although the cost is gradually falling, the initial costs of buying and the high cost of having static solar panels installed professionally in the home can dissuade many potential buyers.
  • As solar panels depend on the sun they are less effective in areas where the sun tends to not shine a lot. Not do they work during the night.
  • To be able to supply considerable amounts of power large areas are needed in which to install solar arrays. Some people consider them to be an ugly stain on the landscape.
  • Materials used in the manufacture of solar panels, such as fluorinated gases, rare earth elements, and silicon, can and do have an impact on the environment.
  • Now you know a bit more about solar panels in general, we can likely say that their advantages outweigh their disadvantages, particularly as the sun is an inexhaustible supply of energy.

Why You Need A Solar Panel

Solar panels do have some limitations. They store electrical energy in lithium batteries that depletes over time depending on what you have connected. They are also not water-proof and are dependent on ambient weather.

But solar panels offer you the possibility of clean limitless power when out camping and trekking with your portable power station or when you're just away from the grid. They are light and compact when folded so they can be an indispensable accessory  to make full use and get the maximum benefit from your portable power station.

So here we present you with a wide selection of solar panels from various manufacturers.
